WHAT ARE WISDOM TEETH?

Wisdom teeth are types of molars found in the very back of your mouth. They generally erupt when you are in your late teens or early twenties. Sometimes, they do not erupt and may become impacted if there is not enough room in the jaw to accommodate them or if the entry angle is awkward.

WHY SHOULD I HAVE MY WISDOM TEETH REMOVED?

An impacted wisdom tooth may need to be removed so that you do not develop gum tenderness, swelling, or pain. Partially or fully erupted wisdom teeth that are impacted may be difficult to clean and they are more susceptible to tooth decay, infection, and gum disease.

WHEN SHOULD I GET MY WISDOM TEETH REMOVED?

When your wisdom teeth initially erupt, their roots may not have fully formed. In addition, the bone surrounding the teeth is less dense. This can make extraction easier and shorten your time of recovery. This is why your Derby Dental Care doctor recommends you have them removed soon after they erupt.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO HEAL FROM WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL?

Once your wisdom teeth are extracted, you begin the healing process. The healing time will vary. Your Derby Dental Care dentist will share with you what to expect after the removal of your wisdom teeth and will provide postop instructions for a quick, comfortable healing process.

POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS IF YOU DO NOT REMOVE YOUR WISDOM TEETH:

- Infection: When there is not enough room for total eruption, the gum tissue around the wisdom tooth may become infected, resulting in pain, swelling, and problems chewing and/or swallowing.

- Cyst Formation: Cysts may form inside the jaw bone as a result of impacted teeth. They may slowly expand and destroy the adjacent jaw bone. They can be difficult to treat.

- Possible Crowding: Your teeth may become crowded due to impacted wisdom teeth. This can lead to long-term damage if left untreated.

- Damage to Adjacent Teeth: Wisdom teeth may make it difficult to clean the surrounding teeth. With time, this may lead to gum disease, bone loss, and/or tooth decay.
